UK Comes Top In Global 'Quality Of Death' Report
Thu, 29 Jul 2010 08:00:00 +0100 | Health News from Medical News Today
The UK has come top in a report ranking the quality of end-of-life care provision around the world that draws heavily from the research of a Glasgow professor. The Quality of Death Report was commissioned by the Singapore-based Lien Foundation, a philanthropic organisation, and conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit. Professor David Clark, director of the University of Glasgow's Dumfries Campus and founder of the International Observatory on End-of-Life Care, contributed significantly to the report in which he is extensively quoted... STICH (Surgical Treatment for Ischemic Heart Failure) Trial Enrollment
Thu, 29 Jul 2010 05:22:43 +0100 | Journal of the American College of Cardiology
Conclusions: STICH randomized patients are characterized by a continuous spectrum of risk, without discordant dominance from any site or country. Clinical site diversity promises to enhance the generalization of STICH trial results to a broad population of patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy. Using spatial accessibility to identify polyclinic service gaps and volume of under-served population in Singapore using Geographic Information System
Wed, 28 Jul 2010 23:00:00 +0100 | The International Journal of Health Planning and Management
This study aims to examine the spatial accessibility to polyclinics and identify service gaps, and suggest optimal sites using Geographic Information System (GIS) to aid in future planning. A national database containing 3.6 million polyclinic visits in 2006 were geo-analysed using ArcView GIS. Patients' travel impedance to the nearest polyclinic was computed using DriveTime to identify areas with the lowest spatial accessibility and highest volume of under-served population. Jurong West and Sembawang were ranked as top areas with poor spatial accessibility to polyclinic services. ArcGIS was used to identify optimal sites with the minimum accumulated distance impedance to this under-served population. If new facilities were set up at these identified sites, volume of visits by Jurong West ...

Post auricular dermoid cyst—a rare lump behind the ear
Wed, 28 Jul 2010 17:37:38 +0100 | European Journal of Plastic Surgery
Abstract  Dermoid cysts are benign developmental anomalies. They are postulated to originate from the congenital inclusion of germ layers in the deeper tissues along the lines of embryonic fusion (New and Erich Surg, Gynecol Obstet 65:48–55, 1937). Dermoid cysts can be divided into three types according to their histological characteristics, namely epidermoid, dermoid, and teratoid (Tuffin and Theaker, Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg 20:275, 1991). The majority of dermoid cysts arise in the ovaries. Those occurring in the cervicofacial region are uncommon, accounting for about 7% of all dermoids (De Souza et al., Plast Reconstr Surg 112(7):1972, 2003). Dermoid cysts around the auricular region are rare. To the best of our knowledge, there have been only four cases of post-auricul...

An innovative design for reconstruction of plantar heel by split partially overlapping anterolateral thigh flap
Wed, 28 Jul 2010 17:37:37 +0100 | European Journal of Plastic Surgery
Discussion  There are a myriad of choices to reconstruct the hindfoot, which include local, distant and free flaps. Microvascular reconstruction is required for more extensive defects of the foot. The ideal reconstruction should achieve durable coverage, adequate contour and solid anchoring to resist shearing forces and to withstand weight bearing. We advocate the use of the split overlapping anterolateral thigh perforator flap when two reliable perforators can be identified and the patient desires a one stage procedure, in selected cases of complex defects of the heel and sole, without the need for debulking. This restores foot function, has minimal donor-site morbidity and achieves satisfactory long-term functional results. Content Type Journal ArticleCategory Cas...

Knowledge, attitudes and practices towards pandemic influenza among cases, close contacts, and healthcare workers in tropical Singapore: a cross-sectional survey
Tue, 27 Jul 2010 23:00:00 +0100 | BMC Public Health - Latest articles
Background: Effective influenza pandemic management requires understanding of the factors influencing behavioral changes. We aim to determine the differences in knowledge, attitudes and practices in various different cohorts and explore the pertinent factors that influenced behavior in tropical Singapore. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional knowledge, attitudes and practices survey in the Singapore military from mid-August to early-October 2009, among 3054 personnel in four exposure groups - laboratory-confirmed H1N1-2009 cases, close contacts of cases, healthcare workers, and general personnel. Results: 1063 (34.8%) participants responded. The mean age was 21.4 (SE 0.2) years old. Close contacts had the highest knowledge score (71.7%, p=0.004) while cases had the highest practice scor...

The Influence of Father Criminality on Juvenile Recidivism: Testing for Delinquent Behaviors as a Mediator
Tue, 27 Jul 2010 18:33:43 +0100 | International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology
This study investigates the relationships between father criminality, prior delinquency, and recidivism using data from 382 incarcerated juveniles assessed in Singapore’s Juvenile Court in 2005. The juveniles are aged 13 to 16 years, with a mean of 14.55 years (SD = 0.93). Using Baron and Kenny’s framework, this study tests the prediction that the prior delinquent behaviors of the juvenile mediate the relationship between father criminality and recidivism in a four-step process. When the juvenile’s prior delinquent behaviors are included in the model, the previous significant relation between father criminality and recidivism disappears. Implications of findings in terms of applied and practical intervention and prevention work for youths in schools and those in incarcera...
